Target Storage wants you to know how storage works so you can have the best self-storage experience. Here are answers to some common questions. If you have other FAQ, please call to speak to our self-storage experts.


 

How do I calculate how much storage space to rent?

Start by looking at our locker descriptions to get an idea of how much can be fitted into some of the sizes available. Than call us with a description of what you are storing, and we’ll help you determine how much space you need. Once you have a rough idea, stop by to get a mental image of how your belongings will fit, and pick just the right locker

Can I reserve a storage locker?

You can reserve a storage locker up to 30 days before you move in. We take a $50 non-refundable deposit, which goes towards your first month’s rent on the day you move in. You can also put your name on a waiting list if you want a specific locker and it is unavailable.

How do I rent a storage locker?

It’s easy. Call us to discuss the size of locker you need, and make sure it is available. We always recommend that you come by to pick exactly the right locker, and you can reserve it for up to one month. When you move in, bring your photo ID, lock and first month’s rent to the office, where you’ll sign a Lease. If you can’t come to the office, the Lease can be signed and faxed or scanned/emailed to us.

What are the initial charges when first renting a unit?

Rents are paid one month in advance so the first month’s rent is due upon rental. There is no extra security deposit or administration fee. If you have reserved your locker with a deposit, that goes toward your first month’s rent.

What kind of documentation do I need to rent a storage locker?

You will need to provide a valid, government-issued form of identification (e.g. driver’s license or BC ID).

How long can a unit be leased for? Is it a month-to-month rental agreement?

We require a one-month minimum rental. No long-term lease is required. Our rental contracts start from the day you move in – your “anniversary date.” You can move in any day of the month. After that, you can stay as long as you like, provided your account is kept current and you continue to observe the terms of the Rental Agreement.

Do you provide any pick up or moving service?

We can recommend some movers who we’ve found to be reliable and affordable. If you need us to help arrange the move, we can do that too. Just give us a call.

Do you have handcarts or dollies available?

Yes. To make your move easier, you’re welcome to use our complimentary carts and dollies while you’re at Target Storage.

Does Target Storage provide locks? Do you keep a key to my storage unit?

You can purchase a new lock at Target Storage. If you prefer to provide your own lock, you’re welcome to do so. You can leave one key with us, in case you forget your key, or if multiple people have access to the locker. If you lose your key, we have bolt cutters.

Is there anything I am not allowed to store in my locker?

Items cannot be perishable, combustible, hazardous, poisonous or illegal. Alcohol is not allowed on the premises. Plants and animals (living or dead!) may not be stored. You can store mechanical items in your unit if you disconnect the battery and remove all fuel.

Do the lockers have electrical power?

Sorry, we do not have outlets in the lockers.

Can I put up shelves in my locker?

Yes, anything freestanding is allowed. We have some shelving units for sale at Target Storage.

Are my goods covered by insurance?

You are responsible for the things you are storing at Target. Check with your insurance agent to see if storage is covered under your current policy or you can contact any other insurance broker.

How do I pay for storage?

Target Storage has several convenient ways to pay. We accept payment by Cash, Cheque, Debit, VISA, MasterCard, and Online Payments (coming soon). We can set up convenient automatic payments or you can leave post dated cheques, so you don’t have to worry about the payments each month. We will send you a receipt each month. If you are away, you can mail your payment to us (please include the locker number) or call us with a credit card number. Of course you can also drop in to pay in person.

Do you offer any discounts?

Currently we offer pre-pay 12 months and receive a 2% discount on your storage fees. We also offer a senior’s discount of 2% on monthly rentals. If you prepay and do move out early, we prorate your rent/discount to the regular rate, and send you a refund.

What happens if I don’t pay my rent on time?

We will call or email to remind you that your rent is due. After 10 days, you incur a $20 Late Fee, which is repeated every 10 days. At that time we also add one of our locks to yours, until your account is brought up to date. We do not put a locker into lien and auction off possessions until we have made every effort to locate and contact you and to work out a payment plan. This includes use of email, any alternate contacts you have given us, registered mail and notices in the paper. That’s why it’s important to make sure our contact information stays current.

When can I access my storage locker?

We’re open 7 days a week so you have access to your belongings when you need it. You can visit your locker whenever we are open, as often as you like. For hours and directions, click here.

Can my spouse, kids or friend have access to my locker?

On your rental contract, you can authorize access by other people you specify. Otherwise, you are the only person allowed to your locker. If movers are bringing your belongings, or picking them up from your locker, you can let us know by phone and we will give them access.

Do you offer RV/boat/car/motorcycle parking?

No, all our storage is indoor and climate controlled. It is designed to store personal or business belongings.

Will you accept deliveries on my behalf?

Yes, with your permission we can expedite deliveries right to your locker.

I am storing valuable possessions and important documents. How can I be sure they’ll be ok?

At Target Storage we treat your belongings the way we would want ours to be treated. We’ve invested in a state of the art climate control system to prevent condensation and mold – this isn’t a friend’s basement. By keeping our whole building very clean, free of pests, and secure, we do our best to make sure your possessions will leave here in the same condition they came. We’ve stored 16th Century manuscripts, family photos, antique furniture, retail inventory and tax files. For more on our facility maintenance, visit Facilities.

What are climate-controlled lockers?

Our entire building is climate controlled. We keep the temperature low, around 10 degrees C, and exhaust the building continually. Damp air does not condense on the surfaces of your belongings.

I’ve gotten rid of a lot of stuff. Can I get a smaller locker?

Certainly. You can move to another locker any time. If it is smaller, our system will credit your account. If it is larger, your account will show a balance which is paid on the day you move.

When can I move out? Do I get any money back if I leave early?

You can leave any time you need to. You don’t need to give us any notice beforehand. On the day you move out, let us know you are leaving so that we can check the locker and close your contract. If you move out within 4 days of your “anniversary date”, we’ll prorate that month’s rent for you and refund your money.

Is Target set up for commercial storage?

We have many customers storing inventory, files, samples and equipment with us. You can drive right up to our loading bay, so your equipment and inventory stays dry. We will take delivery and notify you of product arrival. When you leave a key with us, couriers can deliver right to your locker, and multiple staff can have access. At our Princess Ave facility, where we also provide mailboxes, some customers do their entire business from Target Storage.

What are your mailbox services?

We provide you with an address separate from home or your current office. If you are travelling, or living away from Victoria, we can forward your mail and packages.

Can I buy boxes and other moving supplies from your facility?

Absolutely. We carry one of the largest selections of top quality moving and storage supplies in Victoria at both of our locations. You’ll find boxes, tape and dispensers, protective wrap, furniture covers and more, including environmentally friendly products that are biodegradable and made from recycled materials.
